What is a Direct Drive Air Compressor?

Our ParkerBrand PAC-14-100 100 litre air-compressor is a beast, with a high-capacity tank that is perfect for continual use rather than short bursts. We have other compressors with smaller tank sizes if that's what you need. They use an alternative design that uses a rotary screw, which are still very worthy and are well suited to smaller tank sizes. However, back to the beast! Aside from the high-capacity tank and the high CFM output, this is the only one of our models that utilises a direct drive system.

How it Works

The compressor is typically powered by an electric motor. This motor is connected to the compressor pump using a belt and pulley system. The electric motor has a pulley attached to its shaft. Similarly, the compressor pump has a pulley attached to its shaft. These pulleys are connected by a robust belt.

The belt is a flexible and durable component that wraps around the pulleys of the electric motor and the compressor pump. It transfers rotational motion from the motor to the pump. The compressor pump is the component responsible for compressing air. It usually consists of one or more cylinders with pistons inside. As the pump's crankshaft rotates, it moves the pistons up and down, creating a vacuum on the intake stroke and compressing air on the compression stroke.

Our PAC-14-100 100-LTR direct belt drive air compressor is equipped with a pressure switch that monitors the air pressure in the storage tank. When the pressure reaches a preset level, the switch shuts off the motor to prevent over-pressurisation. When the pressure drops below a certain level, the switch turns the motor back on, and the process is repeated.

Overall, the belt drive system allows for a mechanical connection between the electric motor and the compressor pump, enabling the conversion of electrical energy into compressed air for various applications with maximum safety and reliability thanks to a hand-made build and experience accrued by ParkerBrand doing what they do best; giving you quality tools and machinery at a price that will set your pulse racing!

ParkerBrand Air Tools and CFM Requirement

When buying any compressor, check that the CFM requirement is sufficient to run your air tools. You can find further information regarding that here.

Don't have air tools? We have a wide array of well-made air tools for a whole host of applications. They are an excellent addition to your armoury for D.I.Y projects, car care and maintenance and a stack of other applications. Get right on it!
