Understanding the Load Capacity of a Winch
It is essential to have a winch with the correct capacity. Having the suitable capacity certainly means that you can do what you need to do safely and without compromising your kit.
Deciphering winch capacity can be perplexing due to its dynamic nature as it unwinds. At its maximum capacity, often termed the first-layer load capacity, the winch exhibits its highest strength when the line is mainly unspooled, leaving just one cable layer on the drum.
However, as the cable winds onto the drum, the capacity gradually diminishes until it reaches its thoroughly wound state, known as the fully wound load capacity.
To determine the minimum winch size you may require, a practical rule of thumb is to multiply the gross weight of the heaviest object you intend to pull by 1.5.
For instance, if you plan to pull a 1,000-lb (454 kg) load, you should opt for a winch with a minimum load capacity of 1,500 lbs (680kg). It's as straightforward as that, but it's an important factor.
